We celebrated our eighth wedding anniversary in Amsterdam last year. Seeing that our ninth is coming up soon, I was looking through some photos of that trip this morning and was reminded what a beautiful fall surprise the Netherlands was.

It was our first time in the country, we had always heard about the beauty of the flower fields in the Dutch countryside during spring, but the prominence of fall expressions there were never that strongly emphasized in previous conversations, or even when I did some pre-trip research.
I thought you’d enjoy seeing snippets of the brilliance of the season as much as we did in these images.

An open boat tour of the city’s canals was our favorite way to savor the romance of fall in Amsterdam. Move aside Venice, these are the waterways of dreams!

Rich golden hour light bouncing of the Damrak dancing houses.

The warmest November colors I have ever seen.

It rained most of the time, but I kind of fell for the mysterious backdrops the weather painted the sky with.
Zaanse Schans

Dutch windmills and rose gold hues in Zaanse Schans. That’s a winning visual formula for me. Don’t you think?
Edam

I think pumpkins should always have their own seat in the garden throughout the season.

Quaint and vivid corners.

There is always a space in our travel diary for a joyous surprise, this was our favorite last year. I hope you’ve found some inspiration in this post to fuel your fall in the Netherlands daydreams.
